The Department of surgical sciences has many different activities mainly placed at the Academic hospital.
The activities are quite dependent on the clinical work at the hospital. Many of our doctors and nurses are employed as clinicians or have a combined employment as researchers and contribute with their special experiences in our education at the Department of surgical sciences.
The principal aim for our Department is teaching, research and research education.
The teaching has a clinical focus. The Department is responsible for a detailed teaching of the clinical specialities. The teaching is conducted within the frame of the programs and combines the separate courses for the biomedical program, speech therapist program, medical program, nursing program and the specialist nursing program which includes the undergraduate level as well as the advanced.
The research is often patient orientated and usually commence in the detailed specialties which also constitute the Department of surgical sciences research teams. The research can also have a more overall character, for instance the undergraduate research or epidemiologic research combined with clinical questions. The aim of the research is to contribute to the development within the health- and patient care. Due to the close patient care the conditions to influence the direction and contents of the health care is good.
Post graduate studies is usually taken place within the research teams. PhD students have an undergraduate education in medicine, nursing and biomedicine. Many PhD students are working at the Academic hospital or within the region alongside with their research studies.
